BARTON SLEIGH BELLS
The Gaddis Family Connection
and Collection
Centerline Lookbooks, 2005,
CD-ROM, 103 MB*
$12.95 + $2.95 S&H
"For the
first three-quarters of the nineteenth century East Hampton, Connecticut was the
bell-making capital of the country. Church bells, cowbells, desk bells, and
every kind of bell imaginable, were manufactured by a large population of
bell-makers there, but none have proved to be as popular as sleigh bells. And of
all the names in the history of sleigh bells, none equals that of William Barton
(1762-1849).
"Barton's original and innovative method of
manufacturing sleigh bells sped up production and was effective in the increased
production of sleigh bells thereafter by other similar companies. Original
William Barton sleigh bells have become very collectible, and the Gaddis family
was, and still is, intimately connected to Barton the man and with his
products.
"Assembled here with an informal approach by western
author Chuck Lewis, a genealogical study of Barton and Gaddis connections during
the bell-making era is presented with descent to the current generation of the
Gaddis family. A collection of original Barton Bells has been retained and
maintained by this family, and is currently in the possession of Chuck's wife,
Patricia (Gaddis) Lewis.
"Many original photographs of this collection are
offered here to illustrate, inform, and to hopefully aid bell collectors of
today" (Synopsis from CD insert).
